Also known as asphalt or coal-tar pitch – bitumen comprises organic viscous materials that resist water incursion. Although bitumen can still be found in natural deposits, modern bituminous waterproofing membranes are produced by refining crude oil.

Bitumen becomes fragile and brittle with prolonged exposure to sunlight unless it’s modified with more flexible materials such as acrylic-based polymers or polyurethane.

A modified bitumen waterproofing membrane is often used to prevent water penetration on low-sloped roofs, and it can last upwards of 25 years.

The water-resistant properties of bitumen make it ideal for waterproofing.

Bitumen also has strong natural adhesion and can withstand structural movements of a building.

Further, it retains these properties over a long period, significantly contributing to a building’s longevity and durability.

Bitumen membranes, with their high puncture resistance, provide an effective waterproofing solution for terrace roof gardens, which enhance the local climate.

New bitumen coating waterproofing can be applied over old bitumen sheet roof waterproofing, with no need to dismantle it.

One disadvantage of a bitumen roof waterproofing membrane is that it can absorb rather than reflect heat. While this won’t damage the membrane, it can result in a hot environment in the building below.

Bituminous waterproofing membrane

Bituminous waterproofing can be applied in liquid form as a bituminous waterproofing coating or as a pre-formed bituminous sheet waterproofing membrane.

Areas where bituminous coating waterproofing and bituminous emulsion waterproofing can be applied include low-sloping roofs and concrete foundations.

Asphalt waterproofing membrane

A rubberised asphalt waterproofing membrane includes stabilising materials to ensure adhesion and provide an impervious joint-free application.

Asphalt emulsion waterproofing – an asphalt waterproofing membrane emulsified with water and bentonite clay – can be applied to prevent water incursion in roofs and masonry and metal surfaces.

Asphalt can also be used to waterproof walls and foundations and stays flexible on both vertical and horizontal surfaces.

Generally, liquid-applied asphalt roof waterproofing can last up to 20 years.

APP waterproofing membrane

APP membrane waterproofing refers to atactic polypropylene, a waterproofing membrane made from modified bitumen with the addition of plastomers. An APP modified bituminous membrane may also be reinforced with polyester or fibreglass.

We’ll provide you with a standard warranty of 5 years for your bituminous waterproofing system, under which we’ll replace or repair any defective waterproofing materials at our own expense. We may be able to extend the warranty if you wish, at extra cost.

You’re unlikely to have to resort to your waterproofing warranty, but it’ll come in handy should you decide to sell your property. Such a warranty will be an important factor for prospective buyers and may increase the value of your building.
